Our daily schedule typically stays the same. It is always subject to change depending on the day's events, specials, and generally just how things are going with the class. With that said, following is a general schedule for our class (it will always be posted on the board in the morning):

8:00 - 8:30 Table Jobs

* Writer's/Reader's Workshop and Math will sometimes switch to accommodate the day.

Volunteering

The Parent Volunteer meeting is TODAY at 3:00 in my classroom. I will be discussing the expectations of parent volunteers and how you can be most helpful. If you cannot attend this meeting but still have an interest in helping out in our classroom, please let me know. Following is copy of the handout I will be giving:

Parent Volunteers

Table Jobs:
*Children will make a table choice first thing in the morning. They must choose a table. If all the seats are full at a particular table, they may ask someone how long until it can be their turn (an appropriate answer would be 5 minutes). They must choose another center until it is their turn.

Writer’s Workshop:
*Children will always be drawing their pictures first. K’s will be working on just drawing their picture fully and eventually labeling their pictures (beginning and end sounds are the most important). First graders will be working on labeling pictures and/or writing sentences (1-4 sentences). Second graders will be working on writing several sentences.
*Please DO NOT spell words for the kids. It is important for them to learn to hear all of the sounds in the word. You may help them stretch the word to hear all of the sounds (enunciating each part of the word, for example, d-d-d-o-o-o-g-g-g), but it is perfectly okay if their words are not spelled correctly. This is a natural part of writing development called inventive spelling. Most K’s will leave out most vowels. The only words that I will spell for children are big words that they want to include (for example, Halloween). If you’re not sure whether or not to spell it for them, just stretch it.
*The most helpful thing you can do during Writer’s Workshop is to listen to their stories verbally. Have them explain their picture to you or read to you what they have written. You can ask questions to help them add detail such as: Who else was there? When did this story happen? What happened next? If they tell you part of their story that is not illustrated, ask if they think that needs to be a part of the picture also.
*Children are expected to stay in their seats and raise their hand if they need an adult’s help. They may talk quietly to the people at their table (not at other tables).
*If I am meeting with a small group, I am "off limits." This means that students must wait for another adult (you, Mr. Dany, etc.) to come help them.

Math Centers:
*Children are expected to stay at the center they are at until I let them know it is time to choose a new center.
*Each center will have a task. The most difficult thing during this time is being sure the students are using the materials at the table to complete the task in the appropriate way (i.e. not playing). The most helpful thing you can do during this time is rotate through the tables and help children stay on task. Don’t do it for them.
*If I am meeting with a small group, I am "off limits." This means that students must wait for another adult (you, Mr. Dany, etc.) to come help them.

Centers:
*This is a time for unstructured play through centers. The only big rule during this time is that they must be at a center where there is space for them. If the center is full, they may ask when it can be their turn and then they must choose a new center until it is their turn.

Behavior:
*The way to be most helpful if you feel a child is misbehaving is to quietly redirect their attention. If your efforts are unsuccessful, please let me know so I can help handle the situation.

Please let me know in advance when you plan to join our classroom. It is always helpful for both me and the children to know what to expect. You are always welcome to join us on our fieldtrips, but again, please let me know in advance.

Don't forget tomorrow (Friday, October 9) is Grandparents Day! If you have grandparents joining us, please ask them to arrive at 10:45 to begin our story telling session before lunch at 11:50. I look forward to meeting more of your family and learning about them.

Just a few more things... Friday is an early day with dismissal at 1:00. With the cold weather beginning to join us, we have many more jackets floating around. We have a "on your body, or in your book bag" rule in our classroom, but please put your child's name in their jacket in case they leave it behind somewhere! This will keep our lost and found less crowded and keep your child warm in their own jacket. Thanks so much! Check back soon for pictures!

A special thanks to those who joined us on our field trip to Freedom Park on Friday. It was a successful (and exhausting!) trip and I truly appreciate your help!

This week:

Wednesday (9.30.09) – Beauty and the Beast at ImaginOn: Some seats opened up at the Wednesday showing of Beauty and the Beast. The show begins at 10:00 and we will take the 8:53am bus. If you’d like to join us, please let me know as soon as possible as there are limited seats.

Wednesday (9.30.09) – 1:00-2:00 Ms. Lanning could use volunteers to supervise the playground while she does Physical Fitness assessments. Please contact me or Ms. Lanning (klanning@commchart.org) if you can help out.

All week - I finally have all of our cereal boxes, but now they need to be cut down. If you would like to volunteer your time outside the classroom, this would be an easy project to take home. If you would like to take some, or all, of the boxes home to cut, let me know!

Any homework sent home on Monday should be returned on Friday.

Following is an article concerning the importance of play in the elementary school classroom. Most days we have time scheduled into our day for unstructured, free play. I believe a teacher's role is to not to control the children, rather, to teach self-control. As addressed in this article, studies show that play is crucial in developing these life skills. Check it out!

Hi everyone! We are certainly trucking along as we head into our sixth (already!) week of school.

We're working hard on understanding limitations in an environment that allows for much more choice than many children are used to. This can be a difficult transition for some students. For these reasons, you will notice that we've added assigned seating both on the carpet and at tables. The squares and names on the carpet are there to give the children a concrete visual of where their personal space is and where their body should stay during that time. There are many times during the day that students have a choice as to which table they will sit at (centers, math, etc.) but during Writer's/Reader's Workshop, students now sit at a table with their name on it. We have also implemented some new restroom procedures to help ensure more order during this time.

We are still sorting/classifying in Math. We're moving toward patterning (creating patterns, reproducing patterns, etc.) as well as the concept of number (counting, comparing and writing numbers, creating sets of numbers, etc.). In Science, we've gotten into the concept of weather and will continue to study more about what weather is and how it effects our environment. In Writer's Workshop, we've been working on writing true stories. We sure do have some excellent story tellers! These stories have opened up nice opportunities to discuss family, environments and neighborhood which ties directly in with our Social Studies objectives. Some students will be bringing home a Math Their Way sheet to work on during the week at home, as well as a spelling contract. Both should be returned on Friday.

This Friday, we will be traveling to Freedom Park for our second session with Staci Clark from the Reedy Creek Nature Preserve. All classes will be going and the time for our session is TBA. I will be updating the blog and sending a note home as soon as I am notified of the time we will be going. There is certainly power (and safety!) in numbers so if you're available to travel by city bus to the park with us on Friday, please let me know! Again, I will let you know the specific times as soon as I find them out myself!

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

And we're off!

First two weeks...success! We have all had a great time getting to know one another. We have begun sharing about ourselves and working to create a warm classroom community. Class meetings, centers, reader's and writer's workshop, and exploring math tubs have already become a part of our every day routine!

In math, we've started working on sorting and classifying skills. Students have been exploring various materials and creating groups, or sets, depending on self-selected attributes. Students naturally go to size and color first. I'm encouraging creativity to help students begin thinking "outside the box." For example, when students are sorting letters and numbers, they may first put them into groups based on the color of the number or letter. Then, students may create one set of letters with straight lines and a set with curved lines. Sorting activities can be done with almost anything. It can be a fun game to play at home!
We will be using Math Their Way as our math curriculum this year. Math Their Way uses "junk boxes" for the students to explore and to help develop many different skills. I am currently looking to collect materials for these tubs. If you have any of these at home to spare, please send them in with your child! Stay posted, as this list may continue to grow:

- Old keys
- Bottle caps/Milk carton tops
- Nuts and bolts
- Buttons
- Sea Shells
- Small pebbles (often sold to put in plant containers)

We will be starting our guided reading groups very soon. Students will be reading a variety of books from our Reading A-Z collection during their guided reading time. These books keep these books as a collection of familiar reading to choose from during independent reading time. Please send in a cereal box (or more than one!) for your child to decorate for their personal book box.

I hope to make our first trip to ImaginOn this Friday, September 4. We will be taking the city bus downtown to the transit station and walking to the library from there. Seeing as this is the first time many of the students will be experiencing this, I would like to have several adult hands on deck! If you are available Friday morning to join us on our first outing, please let me know! We will be taking the 8:50 bus and returning on the 11:00 bus.

Please take note of the dress code in the Parent Handbook. For saftey reasons, students should not wear "flip-flops" to school. Any sandal must have a secure back and fasten to the foot. In addition, the straps of shirts should span at least the width of three fingers. Shorts and skirts should reach the fingertips of the child wearing them. We play and move around a lot, so it is advised that girls wearing dresses or skirts wear some sort of shorts underneath. Thank you in advance!

We have gotten off to a great start! We're are moving quickly and soon we'll also be starting our study of the environment and weather. Please continue to check back for updates. Students will be bringing home their folder with important papers, some of which need to be returned. So please check your child's book bag on a regular basis! If you have not returned your Contact Information packet or signed and returned your Parent Handbook form, please do so as soon as possible. Also, the $15 activity fee is due near the beginning of each month. Any fees that have been paid thus far are for the month of September. If you have not sent this in, please do so. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns!

Upcoming Dates:
September 4 - ImaginOn
September 7 - Labor Day (no school)
September 9 - Freedom Park - science fieldtrip
September 11 - Early Dismissal at 1:00
September 14-18 - Spirit Week (more information to follow)

Happy New Year!

Hello everyone! It is already time for a new school year and I am so excited! For all the new parents (and for those other inquiring minds), I want to tell you a little about myself.

I am Jodi Goodman and I will be teaching a K-1-2 class this year! I was raised in Richfield, NC about an hour from Charlotte. I graduated in 2008 from UNC-Charlotte with Elementary Education and I was very fortunate to find the gem that is Community Charter School for my first year of teaching. I fell in love with CCS and I am so happy to be back this year!

I have had many experiences that have molded my educational philosophies and I am happy to have found a fit with CCS. I strongly believe in Positive Discipline as an effective way to teach children (who am I kidding, grown ups too!) how to appropriately handle situations in a peaceful manner. Much of the elementary classroom is about teaching children appropriate behaviors and how to interact with others in a positive and effective way. Positive Discipline uses mutual respect, communication skils, solution-focused problem solving, cooperation and more to help students be successful members of their classroom community. If you would like to learn more about Positive Discipline, please feel free to ask me or you may want to explore the "About Us" portion of these websites: www.positivediscipline.com or www.positivediscipline.org

I am also excited about the multi-age classroom experiences we have at CCS! There are many academic and social benefits. Children have a wider variety of opportunities to work at their own level. Students who may be advanced have opportunities to work with older students and anyone who may need extra time certainly has that opportunity as well. Students have the unique opportunity to play many social roles in the classroom from being the youngest, the middle, as well as the oldest. Each age group has something to share and to learn from the others. As a teacher, I have the chance to develop a deeper relationship with my students throughout the years I spend with them and children have to experience less transitions.

We're going to have a great year and I can't wait to meet all of you! Feel free to contact me at anytime with any questions or concerns that you have.
